What makes a great
event barista.

A great coffee shop barista and a great event barista are not the same person. The skills that matter in a fixed venue are different from the skills that matter on site at a brand activation.

How event barista work differs.

The event environment
How event barista work differs.

A coffee shop barista works in a fixed environment with a consistent setup, the same machine every day, regular maintenance, a known queue pattern and a team around them. An event barista works in a space they have never been in before, on a setup that loaded in that morning, with no backup if something goes wrong and a guest list that may arrive all at once.

The skills that matter at events are different: the ability to dial in a machine quickly in an unfamiliar environment, the ability to manage a queue without a till or a queuing system, the composure to handle a machine issue without stopping service, and the ability to represent a brand correctly - which means knowing the event, knowing the product and interacting with guests in a way that reflects the brand rather than just making coffee.

What to look for when booking.

Assessing quality
What to look for when booking.

When booking a coffee bar for a brand event, ask specifically whether the barista is the company's own trained staff or a freelancer sourced per event. Freelancers are not inherently worse - but the answer tells you how much quality control the supplier actually has. A company that employs and trains its own barista team has a consistent standard. A company that sources freelancers has variable quality depending on who is available.

Ask also whether the barista has worked at brand events and activations specifically - not just in coffee shops. The volume and pace of a brand activation is different from a coffee shop shift. A barista who has worked both knows how to adapt. One who has only worked in fixed venues may struggle with the pace and the unfamiliar setup.

How UNIT approaches barista quality.

UNIT's standard
How UNIT approaches barista quality.

UNIT employs its own trained barista team rather than sourcing freelancers per event. Every barista who works a UNIT event has been trained on the La Marzocco equipment specifically and has experience working brand activations, press days, product launches and exhibitions.

Before every event, the barista is briefed on the brand, the guest profile and any specific requirements. They arrive knowing what the event is, who the guests are and what is expected. They operate as part of the event rather than as a separate catering function. This is the difference between a barista who makes coffee at your event and one who represents your brand while making coffee.
